An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was publicly declared, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January increased in the hours before former President Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been seized.

One account, which became a member recently and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Platform data shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," commented a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Political Attention Emerges

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in recent years, with users able to wager on everything from sports to politics.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market arena.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
