Separately, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where groups with numerous of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day British shipping. Vendors promote the substance there before redirecting customers to other platforms for transactions.

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up channels with thousands of members, populated with images of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed guides for preparing or administering at residence.

After moments of entering one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases take place. The seller provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Within these groups, posts show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to contain new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in demand to recent price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.

Her staff has already seen patients harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
